Cupcakes have become pop culture, Neapolitans are sweet on craze

Cupcakes have been an American culinary treasure since the 19th century. The miniature cakes have been a staple at children’s birthday parties for ages and have been associated with children’s celebrations since they were invented.

For the past 15 years, however, a cupcake craze that targets adults has been sweeping across the U.S., and upscale cupcake bakeries have popped up from coast to coast. California has Sprinkles; New York has Magnolia, Crumbs, Buttercream and more. Not to be outdone, Naples has gotten into the cupcake game with Gracie’s.  Source, July 20, 2010

There are cupcakes, and then, oh my, there are Gracie’s Cupcakes!

What a difference compared to ones you’ve in the past. Each of Gracie’s lusciously fresh cupcakes is a perfect portion of delicious cake and icing. My friend Laura brought by a dozen mini cupcakes, and by the time I polished off the eighth, I drove straight to Gracie’s and started on a half dozen full size ones. I then returned for yet another half dozen, a few days later… you see where this is going…and Gracie keeps bringing out new recipes! The cupcakes, baked fresh every day, are super moist – each one’s icing is uniquely different in texture and taste.
Grace, formerly in computer software consulting, wanted a business that gave her time with the kids, and a business that was rewarding in many ways to her. web hosting ip With her creativity, pleasant manner, and amazing baking skills, this career move is superb for Grace, and for you and me. I used to bring a nice bottle of wine when I visited friends, now it’s wine and a box of cupcakes, and I may soon be asked to ditch the wine, and bring more cupcakes!

Naples Shops Offer Sweet Tooth Niche

“You want it to be velvety, creamy, with a nice buttery taste to it,” said Grace Bolen, owner of Gracie’s Cupcakes and Ice Cream. “And, of course, sweet.”

A sweet tooth is part of what lured Bolen to creating cupcakes. After several years of a career that required travel five days a week, she wanted to work close to home and be with her husband and children. She liked baking, loved sweets and during her travels, Bolen visited cities where cupcake shops were common.

She decided she would try to do something similar. Because she’s not a formally trained baker, that meant Bolen “baked and baked and baked,” she said with a laugh, until she was confident her recipes were right.

Now, Bolen bakes seven or eight dozen cupcakes daily in her shop, which are that day’s flavors. Gracie’s Cupcakes and Ice Cream also sells Royal Scoop, the popular Bonita Springs-made ice cream.

Of those daily dozens, Bolen eats four or five. Call it quality control.

“I will sample everything I make,” Bolen said. “To me, taste is everything.”
